Foundation helps with side-by-side tandem for care farm

Visitors of the care farm It Klokhús in Idzega (in Friesland, a province in the Netherlands) and inhabitants of Friesland can now use a side-by-side tandem by the Edwin van der Sar Foundation. In the summer of 2019 the care farm received a request for the purchase of a side-by-side tandem. After one year of saving and partly through gifts, donations and fundraising, the Fun2Go duo bike could be purchased through the Edwin van der Sar Foundation at the end of May 2020. Read more about the side-by-side tandem for the care farm and the foundation, at which people with disabilities can cycle with a bicycle buddy.

Cycling with the Fun2Go side-by-side tandem

Care farmIt Klokhús has existed for almost two years now. This care farm offers day care for young people with dementia and elderly people with mental and/or physical problems. Owner Jantina Reijenga was asked by local caregivers last year if the care farm could not buy a side-by-side tandem, so that the caregivers could also cycle with their partner or family member. Jantina thought this was a great idea and started working on it. In one year there have been several campaigns. For example, decorations were sold during an open day and the local campsite sold their home-grown vegetables. After several campaigns and donations the electric Van Raam Fun2Go duo bike could be purchased.

Through the self founded foundation It Klokhús everyone in the neighborhood can use the side-by-side tandem. Jantina tells the Sneeker Nieuwsblad: "We believe that everyone who is part of the target group is allowed to use the bicycle, so that we can all continue to enjoy this beautiful area. The bicycle can therefore be rented for a small contribution, with the proceeds being used for maintenance and repairs". The target group includes people with disabilities in movement, hearing, vision, balance and cognition (e.g. dementia). With Stichting It Klokhús people can rent the side-by-side tandem, but people with disabilities can also cycle together with a volunteer. Volunteers can sign up with the foundation as a 'cycling buddy', so that they can commit themselves as a companion. Read more about this on the website of Stichting It Klokhús.

At the end of May, the side-by-side tandem was festively introduced. The oldest visitor of the care farm, Truus of 91 years old, got the honour to make the first official ride with her daughter on the Fun2Go with pedal support. Edwin van der Sar Foundation

The Edwin van der Sar Foundation was founded after Edwin van der Sar ended his active career as a professional football player. The Edwin van der Sar Foundation wants to help people with brain damage to get their lives back on track. Edwin and his wife Annemarie have very consciously chosen for the purpose of their foundation. Their family has experienced for themselves how radical the influence of brain damage can be, after the brain haemorrhage of Annemarie in 2009. The foundation helps organisations with the purchase of side-by-side tandems. Since the start of the Foundation many Van Raam Fun2Go side-by-side tandems have been delivered. The bike is made at Van Raam in a special limited edition and is powder coated in the recognizable orange color of the Edwin van der Sar Foundation.

In 2019 the Foundation visited the Van Raam factory. Edwin van der Sar and his wife Annemarie, together with a large number of the board members, had a tour of the new factory and they have of course tested a number of bicycles. The members of the Foundation were very impressed with the new factory and the production process of the Van Raam bicycles.

Fun2Go side-by-side tandem

The Van Raam Fun2Go side-by-side tandem is a three-wheel tandem where two users sit next to each other so that they can communicate well with each other, but also both have a good view of the road. With the Fun2Go there is one driver who can steer and brake, the co-driver can ride along. For people with disabilities the duo bike can offer a solution, as it has many advantages. Many care institutions make use of this bicycle, just like initiatives to cycle with others such as Fietsmaatjes. These are some of the advantages of the Fun2Go:

  • No step in; easy to take your seat
  • 1 Person steers and both can pedal
  • Good communication because the seats are next to each other
  • Comfortable adjustable seats with backrests
  • Easy to use and very agile

FunTrain: a duo bike trailer

The care farm is still trying to collect money, because they are saving for a duo bike trailer. The Van Raam FunTrain side-by-side tandem trailer can be connected behind a Fun2Go with tow bar, so that a supervisor can cycle with three people. The driver is the only one who steers and brakes, all three co-drivers can ride along. Read more about the FunTrain on the product page.
