Sterre about her wheelchair bike in ANWB Magazine Kampioen

Sterre Tesselaar (17) suffered oxygen deprivation during her birth, which left her severely disabled physically. Despite limitations, she can enjoy beautiful moments in life, such as taking a ride on the Van Raam VeloPlus wheelchair bike. In the ANWB Magazine Kampioen Sterre tells more.

Totally wheelchair-dependent

Sterre: " When you are completely dependent on a wheelchair and help from others, your world is small. Spontaneously visiting a friend is not possible. At home, at school and in day care I'm indoors and if I go somewhere I'm in a taxicab or our adapted bus, so again locked in.”

An electric wheelchair bike

"At some point we were introduced to the electric wheelchair bike. It has a platform at the front for my wheelchair. I will never forget the first time we tried it, it gave such a wonderful feeling! We currently have a wheelchair bike of our own and we cycle whenever we want."

On the wheelchair bike I feel free

"I prefer riding through the woods and dunes near Schoorl and Bergen (the Netherlands). Being outside, the smell of the woods, the wind in my hair; on the bike I feel free. My father or mother pedals, so we enjoy our bike rides together. They have to pedal a little bit, because when it's going fast, I like cycling the most."

The VeloPlus wheelchair bike
