With the VeloPlus and OPair wheelchair bikes from Van Raam, you can transport people who are dependent on a wheelchair. The steering method differs between both bikes. Discover in this article what the exact difference is.
The Van Raam OPair is a wheelchair bike on which a person is transported at the front of the bike. This person can still transfer from the wheelchair to the bike independently.
The Van Raam VeloPlus is a wheelchair transport bike on which a person with their own wheelchair can be transported on the front platform of the bike. This bike is wider than the OPair because it can transport a person in a wheelchair on the bike. Therefore, two different steering methods have been chosen.
The OPair has steering based on the Ackermann principle. Simply put, this means that when taking a turn, the inner wheel turns sharper than the outer wheel. This prevents one wheel from slipping and losing grip on the road.
The steering of the VeloPlus is a combination of that of a cargo bike and the Ackermann principle. The platform of the VeloPlus rotates during cycling, just like with a cargo bike. Additionally, the wheels also rotate extra according to the Ackermann principle. This ensures that the bike has a smaller turning radius than, for example, a cargo bike. It also means that the steering angle is smaller (thus requiring less movement of your arms while steering). This increases safety in traffic as you can keep both hands on the handlebars when taking a sharp turn.
