Chain and Drive System

A tandem usually has two chains on the bike. It's important that they run smoothly. If one chain is worn or doesn't work properly, you'll notice it on the other side too. Check for rust, listen for strange sounds, and see if there's play in the chain or gears.

Brakes and Lighting

With two people on one bike, a good braking system is extra important. Test whether the brakes respond quickly and don't make strange or squeaking sounds. Also check immediately whether the lighting works properly.

Battery and Motor (for E-bike Tandems)

Is it an electric tandem? Always ask about the age of the battery. A worn battery will need to be replaced eventually, and that brings costs with it. Most batteries last about 5 to 7 years with normal use.

Frame Number Check

Use the appropriate databases to verify whether the bicycle is registered as stolen. This way, you can avoid taking home a stolen bike.

Play and Stability

vAlways take a test ride, preferably with two people. While cycling, pay attention to whether the handlebars respond well and whether the pedals don't show any 'play' - meaning no wobbling feeling or loose movements. Do you hear strange sounds or does the bike feel unstable? Then there might be wear on bearings or connections.

Buying a used tandem is usually much more affordable. But it remains a used bike... so you don't know for sure how your predecessor handled it, what's been replaced, or what maintenance you can expect in the short term. Especially with e-bike tandems, repair costs can quickly add up.
