quality inspection of a van raam bicycle

Before a Van Raam special needs bicycle leaves the factory on its way to a customer, it is thoroughly inspected. The first inspection takes place after the bicycle has been assembled and is checked by an assembler, after that the bicycle goes through to the quality control where it is extensively inspected by a quality control technician.

Inspection at the end of the assembly

After a custom-made Van Raam bicycle is assembled, it is inspected at the end of the assembly for a number of points using a checklist. In the video, an OPair wheelchair bike is checked. The checklist includes the following items:

  • Inspection of the handlebars

  • Inspection of the brakes

  • Inspection of the motor and anchor plate

  • Inspection of the carrier

Inspection of the handlebars

The handlebars are checked for several parts (in the video at 0:15); for excessive free play, steering angle and the attachment of the steering rods. This is also referred to as the steering gear within Van Raam.

Inspection of the brakes

The brakes are very important for a safe bike and are inspected, we call this also the braking performance, on several points (at 0:19): The attachment of the calipers and whether the brake discs are properly mounted. In addition, the tightening of the brake discs (whether the brake discs do not press on the wheels) is inspected during the rotation of the wheels. The correct mounting of the brake pads on the front wheel is also inspected.

Inspection the motor mounting (for bikes with pedal support)

When inspecting the motor (at 0:34), it is make sure that the motor is properly attached to the bike. Consider the engine mounting nuts and the anchor plate bolt that are in the anchor plate. The anchor plate is part of the attachment that secures the bike to the wheels.

Inspection ofthe carrier

Finally, the attachment of the carrier is checked at all points (at 0:46). On the overall attachment of all bolts, nuts and clamps. This involves checking all fastenings, the carrier must be attached to the back of the bike in many places.

Quality inspection of a Van Raam bicycle

After the Van Raam bicycle has been checked, at the end of the assembly line by an assembly worker on the above points, the bicycle goes to the qualityinspection. The control technician inspects the bicycles on several components by making a test ride. The video shows an Easy Rider being checked on the points listed below.

Inspection before the test drive

Before the quality inspector takes the test ride, the bike is inspected forthe assembled parts (at 0:58). In addition, a bicycle with pedal support is provided with the correct software by connecting it to the computer. Through a test program on the computer, the electrical sensors are tested, the electric motor and all other electrical components. Then the lighting and electrical connections of the lighting are tested. This includes looking at the cable length and the contacts. Each bike has its own assembly note, with all the selected options. The assembly note is used to check whether the bike has the right options and whether everything has been assembled.

Inspecting a bike with and without pedal support during a test ride

Then the bicycle is inspected during a test ride (at 1:03). Here the starting assist is tested and the pedal support while cycling. All 3 display modes are tested. Then the control technician cycles a bit on the bike without pedal support. "I shift up and down without pedal support, so I feel better how the bike shifts", explainscontrol technician Guus van der Linden - Van Sprankhuizen.

Inspection of the handlebars

While cycling, the handlebars are inspected again (at 1:12). "I inspect the handlebars for excessive free play, the position of the handlebars and the attachment of the handlebars. I also check whether the handlebars are tight enough and whether the position of the brake levers and grips are correct", says van der Linden - Van Sprankhuizen. By making a full turn (movement of the handlebars) to the left and right, the bicycle turns. The control technician inspector listens for any noises and feels whether there is too much resistance.

Inspecting the brakes of a Van Raam bicycle

While inspecting the functioning of the brakes (at 1:21), the control technician listens carefully to the sound and pays attention to the tracking (position of the wheels) during braking. From this, he can tell if the brakes are working properly.

Inspecting the bicycle for other parts

While cycling, the control technician (at 1:23) keeps an eye out for any side noises and other notable things. The tire pressure is also checked and felt during the ride to make sure there are no abnormalities in the tires. Next, bikes with pedal support are inspected at full electric support, inspecting the bicycle by making an emergency stop (at 1:26). Finally, the control technician cycles backwards a bit on bikes where this is possible and tests the parking brake.

What happens when a Van Raam bicycle is finished?

Once the bike is fully approved, the assembly note(note with information about the bike and additional options) and some photos are stored in the system. After the documents have been saved in the system, the bike is transported to the dealer, who makes sure the bike gets to the customer. On the page "How we make bicycles" you can read about the process a Van Raam bicycle goes through before it reaches the final inspection.
