Cycling with Polyneuropathy

“My name is Lyda Koerten, I’m 78 years old, and I recently moved into a lovely, single-level apartment in Uitgeest, the Netherlands. No more stairs for me, thanks to the elevator. For years, I enjoyed riding a regular two-wheeler. But due to polyneuropathy, a condition that damages the nerves, I can’t really feel my feet. I stand and walk on them, but I don’t actually feel it. Because of this, I fell off my bike a couple of times and lost my confidence. Still, I longed to cycle again - I missed it so much!”

The Search for Freedom

“Through the Social Support Act (Wmo), I got in touch with Jorne, a vanRaam employee. He visited me at home with several bikes, but none of them were suitable. Luckily, he invited me to a local event where I could try out the Easy Go mobility scooter bike. It was a perfect fit right away! Jorne helped me get started and explained everything clearly. In the end, I was able to purchase the mobility scooter bike through a personal budget. It fits perfectly in the storage area of my apartment complex!”

Enjoying Every Day

“Getting used to riding a tricycle took some time, it’s different from a two-wheel bike. The Easy Go comes with pedal assistance, a basket, and a mirror. I use the mobility scooter bike for everything: grocery shopping, visiting my daughter, cycling with friends, and I even went to a concert recently. By lowering the footplate, I can easily ride straight into shops. The pedal assistance works perfectly. I usually ride in mode 2, but when I come to a hill or overpass, I switch to mode 3. Then I switch back, because I like to stay active, I see it as a sport. I cycle almost every day and cover about 25 to 30 kilometers daily. In less than a year, I’ve already cycled 2,400 kilometers. It keeps me active and brings me so much happiness.”

Lots of Positive Reactions

“I give the Easy Go mobility scooter bike a 9 out of 10! The service from my dealer, Bikeshop Egmond, is also excellent: friendly, knowledgeable, and always helpful. The Easy Go has already been in for maintenance twice, and everything went smoothly. Since I got the scooter bike, I’ve received so many positive reactions. People even come to my door to check it out. I also get a lot of support in traffic; people notice me, stop, and give me the right of way. That makes me feel safe.

The Easy Go mobility scooter bike has given me back my freedom and independence. I feel like I’m fully part of society again!”
