Jolanda: “I got my diploma and I am super proud of it!”

Jolanda ten Damme works at vanRaam as a mechanic in the side-by-side bicycle line. After 22 years in a bakery, Jolanda decided at the age of 53 to follow the work-based bicycle mechanic learning program. "Assembling bicycles really turns out to be my thing."

Story Jolanda mechanic vanRaam

How does vanRaam move you?

“I had worked in a bakery for 22 years and was ready for something different. But what? I knew it had to involve screws. So I took a leap into the unknown. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I applied for a work-based training position at vanRaam and was pleasantly surprised to be selected. And I was happy; I was going to school, doing a program. I completed it in 2.5 years. I was just over the moon. After all, you’re 53 and starting something completely new.”

“In the program, we were 16 people of all ages. The diploma ceremony took place in the canteen. That was really fun. We got a small gift and a card. I earned my diploma at vanRaam and I’m super proud of it.”

What work do you enjoy the most?

“I really enjoy laying cables. The gear cables, brake cables, and everything that goes with them. On the side-by-side bicycle assembly line, we work across eight stations. I’m currently at station 8, the final station. There, I check that everything is correct. I hadn’t worked that station before and I like it much more than I expected.”

What moves you at vanRaam?

“We all put a bike together from A to Z. That’s already very satisfying. But the best part is that we bring a lot of joy to people with disabilities, of all ages. When I see a vanRaam bike on the street, I think: yes, I helped make that.”

How do you make an impact?

“Recently, I went for a ride on a side-by-side bicycle with my 88-year-old aunt. She has dementia and doesn’t get out much anymore. On a side-by-side bike, she suddenly can ride. We even went out for coffee. Seeing her on the bike, hair and face in the wind… she loved it. That gives me great satisfaction, and that’s what it’s all about. We can reach these people, and I really enjoy that.”

How do you experience the work atmosphere?

“It works well when everyone is on the same page. So if something goes wrong, you need to discuss it, and I’m all for that. What helps is that everyone feels included. Everyone is welcome on company outings, including temporary workers and interns. That’s good for the atmosphere.”

“Everything here is well organized. You get your salary on time, your workdays are clear. If you want Thursday afternoon off, that’s no problem. That’s very important. I’ve had multiple employers through temp agencies, and not everywhere is as well organized as at vanRaam.”

How was it going back to school?

“That was sometimes quite challenging. I had exams: Dutch, math. I hadn’t been to school in 40 years, so at times it was a lot to handle. I sometimes thought, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ But it was during COVID, so I had time on the weekends to really focus on my studies.”

Story Jolanda mechanic vanRaam

What do you say to people considering a new job or training program?

“Just take the plunge. If it doesn’t work out, you can always do something else. But take a leap. It will make you stronger. And more confident.”
