Different types of electric tandems

At vanRaam, manufacturer of special needs bikes, we get more and more demand for electric tandems. Just like with the conventional two-wheel bike, people also want pedal support at the tandems bike. In the meantime, all the different types of tandems in the product range are available as electric tandems. In this article you can read more about different types of electric tandems in the vanRaam product range, pedal assistance, the e-bike app, special options for the tandems and the vanRaam bicycle configurator.
Electric tandems in the vanRaam product range
vanRaam has different types of electric tandems in the product range. The bicycles are used to be able to enjoy cycling with someone else. The product range can be divided in five types of tandems:
A two-wheel tandemfor two adults: the Twinny.
A three-wheel tandem with two wheels behind, for two adults: the Twinny Plus.
A two-wheel tandem for an adult and a child: the Kivo.
A three-wheel tandem with two wheels behind, for an adult and a child: the Kivo Plus.
A tricycle where the drivers sit next to each other instead of behind each other: the Fun2Go.
Twinny two wheel tandem
The Twinny is a traditional two wheel tandem which is suitable for two adults, one of whom cannot participate independently in traffic. Because of the low step through, it is easy for the drivers to get on and off the bike. With the optional switchable freewheel, the driver can set whether the co-driver is cycling at the same pace or that the co-driver is not cycling and the pedals are turning freely. If there is chosen to put the main steering at the rear, even a third option is possible: having the co-driver cycle at his / her own pace.

Twinny Plus three wheel tandem
The Twinny Plus is based on the Twinny tandem. The bike has also a low step through, so the drivers can get on and off the bike easily. The big difference is that the Twinny Plus is a three wheel tandem and has two rear wheels instead of one. Because of the two rear wheels, the three wheel tandem is more stable and getting on and off the bike is even easier because the bike stands still. Compare the vanRaam tricycle tandems in the article 'Three tricycle tandems by vanRaam in comparison'.

Kivo two wheel tandem
The Kivo is a bike where a child can sit in front and an adult in the back. In front, the child can see the environment well, while the adult has a good view on the child or co-driver. Just like with the Twinny, the bike has a low step through. The Kivo is available with a variety of options and comes standard with a switchable freewheel hub with three different settings:
The pedals of the co-driver are moving the same as the pedals of the driver. The co-driver has to pedal along.
The co-driver can cycle at his / her own pace.
The pedals are moving independently of the main driver's pedals. The pedals rotate freely and the co-driver cannot cycle.

Kivo Plus three wheel tandem
The Kivo Plus three wheel tandem is based on the Kivo. A child can sit in front and an adult in the back at this bike also. The Kivo Plus has a low step through and comes with two rear wheels.Just like with the Kivo, the Kivo Plus comes standard with a switchable freewheel hub with three different settings:
The co-driver can cycle along because the pedals are the same as those of the companion.
The co-driver can cycle at his / her own pace, the pedals are not the same as those of the attendant.
The co-driver does not have to cycle along.

Fun2Go duo bike
The Fun2Go duo bike is a side-by-side tandem. Instead of sitting behind each other, the drivers are sitting next to each other at this bike. One person steers, while both can cycle along. The Fun2Go has no step in, so the drivers can go sit easily. Both drivers can see the environment well and they can communicate easily with each other because they sit next to one another. The social contacts and the control are optimal at this bike. With the optional switchable freewheel with three different settings the co-driver can cycle along, cycle in his / her own pace or not cycle at all. The Fun2Go is also available with a variety of options and accessories, so that the bike can meet all requirements.

Pedal support at vanRaam special needs bikes
Every tandem in the vanRaam product range can be performed with pedal support. The pedal support is only for support with cycling. The motors, batteries, controller, Smart display and software have been developed by and for vanRaam and especially for special need bikes. The motor can’t take over the cycling itself, such as with the Easy Go scooter bike. The drivers will always have to pedal themselves. However, the pedal support can help you with starting up in order to cycle away easily. The pedal assistance has 3 positions and you can even use it to cycle backwards. Read all about the pedal support system on our page: vanRaam pedal support electric bikes (e-bikes).
vanRaam also developed an app with different functionalities. The e-bike app can be used to set a different support mode on your vanRaam bike. Click on the button below if you want to know more about the vanRaam cycling app.
Special options and bike configurator
In addition to the pedal support, electric tandems can be performed with a variety of options. Some examples are: backrest support, foot fixation or belts. In this way, your vanRaam bike can be completely adjusted to what you need to be able to cycle safely and comfortably. Look at the options page for the special options for vanRaam bikes.
On the vanRaam website you can also create your own special needs bike with the configurator. This allows you to customize a bike adapted to your wishes.
