Customer experience Thuja e-bike - Michiel Muermans
For Michiel Muermans, going out and about feels natural again. Since he started riding his Thuja e-bike, he no longer has to work out routes around stops or depend on others. He gets on and rides independently to the woods, the beach or around The Hague with his dachshund Lotje. The Thuja has given him back something he had missed for a long time: freedom.
Introducing Michiel
“My name is Michiel Muermans. I am married, 59 years old and live in The Hague. Unfortunately, I had a brain haemorrhage when I was 52. Since then, I have no longer been able to drive, and cycling on two wheels is no longer possible either.
I have had my vanRaam Thuja e-bike since 2 June 2026. I chose this bike because I really missed my freedom. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere on my own, I was always dependent on public transport. But even then, you do not arrive exactly at your destination, only at a nearby stop. Now I can cycle to the woods or the beach again myself.
Gaining confidence on three wheels
The Thuja is very stable once you are used to the feeling of having three wheels on the ground. It does take some getting used to when going up and down ramps or riding on a slope.
What I also find very convenient is that you can simply stay seated on the bike at traffic lights. If the bike is in the right gear, you can easily set off again afterwards.
The Thuja e-bike Active Shimano has exceeded my expectations, especially in terms of ease of use and performance. Connecting the charger plug is also very easy thanks to the self-aligning magnetic system. Many mobility scooter brands could learn a thing or two from that.

Useful extras on my Thuja e-bike
The cargo basket is a must-have for me. An extra mirror on the left is also very useful.
I am cycling more and more now that I am familiar with the Thuja and am using muscles again that I have not used for seven years.
Out and about with dachshund Lotje
One lovely experience is that I really enjoy taking my dachshund Lotje with me. When we go outside for an outing, she is already jumping because she wants to come along on the Thuja.
This bike means a great deal for my personal freedom and independence. I have completely got them back.

Test thoroughly first, then order
I had a good experience with the ordering process and the dealer’s service. As Mobiliteitsplein Den Haag is my neighbour across the road, I had the opportunity to try a Thuja with hub gears for a few days.
With an investment like that, of course, you are not going to make a decision after just one short ride. This meant I was really able to test the Thuja. After that, I ordered it.
I would give the Thuja e-bike a 9. The purchase price is, of course, a drawback. I also think it is a shame that vanRaam does not offer a suitable and affordable cover for the Thuja. I have now bought a cover from Frame Up, as the bike is kept outside on the street at night.
But the most important thing is what the Thuja e-bike gives back to me: my freedom. I can cycle to the woods or the beach again myself. And when Lotje is allowed to come along, she is already jumping with excitement.”
