Assembly of the vanRaam VeloPlus wheelchair bike

When you get on a vanRaam bike, you want everything to be just right. Smooth, safe, and set up precisely to your specification. "Every bike that leaves our factory goes through a double final inspection, which includes actually riding it," says Hein Visscher, Product Quality & Compliance Manager at vanRaam. What does that actually involve?

For confidence from the very first ride

If you visit vanRaam, you'll see people cycling through the factory all day long. Hein: "That's because every bike that's assembled goes through two final checks. First, the mechanic does a test ride to see, feel, and listen to whether everything is right. Then the quality inspector installs the software and does an additional test ride to be one hundred per cent certain that the bicycle leaves the factory in perfect condition.”

The frame, the foundation of every bike, is tested at multiple stages. "Frames are randomly checked in a 3D scanner to monitor the process. Are all the dimensions correct? Are all the welds right? Are there any deviations?" says Hein.

Because the entire production process takes place in-house, quality can be monitored at every step. That starts with the choice of materials. "Our frames are made from steel rather than aluminium, which makes them exceptionally strong. The paint finish, from our own paint shop, is also built to last, able to withstand years of harsh weather."

New bike development involves extensive testing, too. Alongside user trials and internal testing, every bike goes on the roller bench. "We check load capacity, among other things. We simulate sitting on the saddle or riding over a bumpy road 300,000 times. Yes, that's a lot. And because you shouldn't only mark your own work, we also bring in an independent testing agency. It's test, test, and test again, and that’s something we can be proud of.”
