Willem Palm has been riding a vanRaam Balance since February 2026. After several falls from his conventional bicycle, he wanted to be able to cycle with confidence again.
Choosing a low-step e-bike
“I chose this low-step e-bike because I can easily put my feet on the ground. This means I can get on and off the bike more easily and with a lower step. I also find the bike sturdy. I have now cycled 7,351 kilometres. This low-step e-bike gives me a great sense of security because I can quickly put my feet on the ground whenever necessary.”
Long bike rides through beautiful areas
“I use my bike to cycle longer loops and routes through the polder. I do this both on my own and together with my wife. She cycles along on her electric bike. We cycle 40 to 50 kilometres a day. My bike has a phone holder, which I use for navigation.
We often cycle along cycle node routes, as there are so many possibilities. We also take the bikes with us on the bicycle carrier. This means that the four of us, together with our daughter, go to Belgium to cycle there. We also regularly drive to Bergen. We leave the car there and then cycle through the dunes. It is beautiful. Sometimes we go to the Veluwe, where we were born. We leave the car in Stroe and enjoy cycling across the Veluwe.”

Increasing experience and confidence
“I have two batteries. As soon as the first one runs out, I can switch to the other battery. I charge the bike every day. At first, I had to get used to using the bike, such as the buttons and the battery. I had to discover how far I could cycle on one battery. After some practice and through experience, I have become increasingly familiar with this. Now I set off with confidence. The bike means a great deal to my personal freedom and independence. I am no longer allowed to drive a car, but with this bike I can go wherever I want again. I am so happy that I have the bike. I go out in all weathers. With this bike, I have regained my freedom.”
