‘The best cycling bike for everyone’
In this column, Jan-Willem Boezel, CEO of vanRaam, explains why vanRaam prefers to make tens of thousands of special bikes rather than hundreds of thousands of identical ones. His belief is clear: everyone deserves a bike that truly suits their body, situation and wishes. Or, as Jan-Willem puts it: "Our goal is simple: to make the best cycling bike for everyone."
"You won't make me happy by making a hundred thousand identical bikes. I'd rather make ten thousand special, high-quality bikes that really make a difference for our users. Our goal is simple: to make the best cycling bike for everyone.
You can only achieve that by looking and listening carefully. In our showroom, and also at people's homes, we don't really have sales conversations. They are conversations where someone gets honest advice about what best suits their body and situation. That's why I dare to say that we really know our customers. We know what they encounter. And that's precisely why we offer so many different options on our bicycles. So that everyone can remain mobile.
Making things ourselves is in our DNA
Our roots lie in making bicycle frames. Making things ourselves is in our DNA. From welding to designing innovative technology, we do everything in-house. This allows us to maintain control over our quality and create something unique for our customers. In fact, our mentality can be compared to Pippi Longstocking's famous saying: we've never done it before, so we think we can do it. We think in terms of possibilities, even if something has never been done before.
Room for smart and new solutions
I have actually experienced all the processes within the company myself: from welding, turning and milling to devising new solutions and technical designs. Now, as CEO, I try to encourage people to keep thinking outside the box: can things be done differently or more intelligently? But I also make sure that as we continue to grow, we remain true to our roots. We often do things slightly differently. For example, we have developed our own electrical system. A system specifically for tricycles that is fully customisable to the user. Because we make things ourselves, we are flexible.
Giving people freedom and independence again
My motivation is that I want vanRaam bikes to be seen all over the world. It makes me proud to see that our bikes give people so much freedom and independence."
